Castell del Remei Gotim Bru.

The Castell del Remei estate is made up of 400 hectares in an outstanding location. It has some notable buildings including the castle, the winery, the church devoted to the Virgin of the Remei and the restaurant.

Today, Castell del Remei manages 140 ha of vineyards, of which it owns 70. In order to take advantage of the wealth and diversity of the designation of Origin, the other 70 hectares belong to local farmers, who receive advice and supervision throughout the year.

The winery produces about 800,000 bottles a year, which are sold in almost equal parts on the domestic and export markets.

The Castell del Remei wines enjoy widespread reputation both nationally and internationally and they have received numerous awards and excellent reviews from the trade press. In our desire to better ourselves, we have made a firm commitment toquality, constant research and team work.

The Castell del Remei Estate is located in the district of La Noguera, at an altitude of about 250 m above sea level.

The soil is mainly calcareous (chalky). However, there is a marked diversity of soils in the estate that contributes to the enormous wealth of nuances typical of Castell del Remei wines.

All the plots are located on what was the bottom of an inner sea that covered a large part of the Central Depression during the Cenozoic Era.

To the south, one finds detritic rocks, typical of Catalonia. In this arid climate, the force of the elements frequently results in conditions of significant water stress, which is controlled via support irrigation in those years when this proves necessary.

In the north of the estate, there is a shallow water table that creates stress for want of oxygen in the vines, preventing excessive vigour in rainy years and helping them overcome the harsh summers.

The area enjoys all the characteristics that are typical of a Mediterranean-Continental climate.

January is the coldest month and July is the hottest. Temperature extremes range from minus 8 °C in the winter to 40 °C in the summer.

Rainfall humidity
Rainfall figures are very low, less than 250 ml/m2 a year. Summer and winter are the two driest seasons. The yearly average humidity is 63.7 %, with some months reaching 50 %.

Westerly and north-westerly winds predominate and they are strongest in March and June. There is practically no wind in winter. In the summer, there is an afternoon breeze from the sea every day that is locally known as the “Marinada”, which cools down the grapes that have been warmed by the hot sun during the day.

Other characteristics
The most outstanding characteristic is the thick fogs in winter, with an average of 34.6 days of fog a year during the last 15 years.

The Castell del Remei Estate has a surface area of 400 ha in a single block, of which 70 are planted with different native and international grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Macabeo and Pinot Noir.

The grapevines average 20 years in age and are espalier trained on iron posts and galvanised steel cable, using a double Royat cordon pruning system with a density ranging from 2,000 to 3,800 plants per ha. The clones and rootstock have been selected for optimal adaptation to the soil and grape variety while maintaining significant diversity.

Current yields are based on the theory that plants should be provided with the minimum essentials, to achieve the highest quality, while sacrificing quantity. Average yields stand at about 6,000 kg/ha.

The vineyards ensure a consistent supply of a high percentage of the grapes, thereby guaranteeing a stable vinification volume.

Bodegas Castell del Remei was designed and built in 1780 to make aged wines.

The winery consists of 6 adjoining buildings covering a total surface area of 5,500 m2. All the buildings have a forged iron structure built on stone with walls up to 60 cm thick. They are built partially underground to avoid temperature variations.

Half of the winery is used for barrel ageing and it currently holds about 1950 French and American oak barrels. The remaining space is occupied by the vinification and wine dispatching halls, offices, a shop and a multi-purpose room which regularly hosts all types of cultural events, presentations, and occasional exhibitions of works by different artists.

Since the winery is over two hundred years old, conceived from its very beginnings tomake the best wines and it is surrounded by vineyards, it can be considered as one of themost traditional and representative château–type wineries in Spain.
