Having explored every corner of the planet where a bottle of wine can be sold, Christopher Cannan has had a long association with the wines of Spain.

In 1978 he founded Europvin, a Bordeaux based negociant company , specialised in the export of top quality wines from all parts of France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. He “discovered” the Priorat in the early 1980′s and started exporting the wines from the only quality orientated estate in the area at the time, Celler Scala Dei.

In the early 1990′s Christopher met Alvaro Palacios and Réné Barbier, he quickly recognized the potential of the Priorat under the guidance of this “new wave” of young producers.

In 1997, with his wife Charlotte, he purchased Clos Figueras, an 18 hectares estate, just to the north of the reputed village of Gratallops in the heart of the best production zone of the Priorat DOQ. The soil here is the famous “llicorella” or schist that is the secret behind the distinctive mineral flavours that ranks the Priorat with the world’s greatest wines. Planted with the local Garnacha and Cariñena, with a dose of Syrah, Mourvedre and Cabernet Sauvignon, the wines of Clos Figueras convey all the distinctive charm and personality of the Priorat with great finesse and exceptional elegance. The international wine press was quick to recognize the unique characteristics and world class stature of the estate. Already with the 2001 vintage, Robert Parker awarded Clos Figueras with 96 points and repeated the same outstanding score for the 2005 vintage.

Today Christopher is guided with the advice of Alain Graillot, famous for his superb Syrah based wines in the Rhône Valley of France. Apart from the acclaimed red wines, the estate also produces an outstanding white wine, mostly from the Viognier grape; additionally a magnificent olive oil from the Arbequina variety with the DOP Siurana.

Christopher Cannan is also co-owner of the famous Espectacle wine from the neighbouring Montsant district, a 100% Grenache from a 120 years old vineyard. The first vintage in 2004 immediately became a legend when Parker’s review awarded this wine with 99 points !

In recognition for his efforts on behalf of the wines of France, Christopher was made a “Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole” by the French government in 1999.

Priorat D.O.Q.

Wine has been produced in the Priorat since Roman times. During the middle ages, right up to the mid 19th Century, the entire area was exploited and controlled by the monastery of Scala Dei.

Located in Catalonia, about 25 kilometers inland from the Mediterranean and the ancient city of Tarragona, just 2 hours South West of Barcelona, the region has a unique landscape of outstanding beauty.

The vineyard area consists of a series of rugged hills dominated by the emblematic Montsant mountain range. The soil is extremely poor, consisting of pure schist. This combined with the warm, dry Mediterranean climate give wines with a unique personality. The low yields, due to the difficult terrain, harsh climate and poor soil, give the Priorat wines a great depth of flavor, aromas of ripe red fruits and a strong minerality from the soil. The altitude varies from 400 to 700 metres above sea level, giving cool nights and ideal conditions for maturing the grapes. This in turn contributes to the wines having good acidity, a delightful freshness and the ability to age for more than 20 years.

All these conditions, combined with a recent history of much improved winemaking, has contributed to the Priorat being recognized for the production of world class wines and being awarded, along with La Rioja, the coveted DOQ appellation.

Situated in the heart of Gratallops, the winery is functional boasting a spectacular 300 years old underground cellar, with ideal conditions for ageing the Clos Figueras range of wines in French oak casks, some of which are renewed every year. The surroundings are perfect for receiving visitors and tastings.
